  1. Casey Fry says:

“There would have been fireworks happening now, if things were different.”

“Fireworks?” Ricker looked at Shadow. The ghost was twitching and dancing against the ground at the whim of the growing fire. Despite the erratic, involuntary movement, the ghost’s white eyes never moved from the flames. Never blinked.

“Great bursts of color high in the air, cracking so loud they made your ears ring. I can still hear them sometimes, if I think hard enough. I can still smell them, and I remember writing my name in the air with the tip of a sparkler.” The ghost laughed, but the sound was almost broken by loss.

Ricker stared at Shadow for a moment, not quite knowing what to say, still not understanding. “What… why would they do that?”

Shadow’s eyes moved from the fire for the first time in an hour, focusing on the assassin. For a while, the only sound was the crackling of the fire as it ate away at the logs. Finally, Shadow closed his eyes, all but disappearing in the darkness – nothing more than another shadow dancing on the ground. His voice echoed in Ricker’s voice as he answered, sorrow and loss aching in Ricker’s chest, though the emotions were far removed from his own.

    “I don’t even remember.”
